Race day two of the KA Sail SA Summer of Speed was held yesterday at a very windy Murray Mouth. The original format was to be a giant slalom race, but this was quickly scrapped in favour of outright speed sailing along the 500m speed strip in super-flat water and winds of around 20-25 knots. The winds started out as W/SW, but quickly swung to the SW and tightened the course. The Murray Mouth is a constantly changing series of sand bars and with ongoing dredging work, it is always providing different and challenging conditions – sometimes favorable……..sometimes not. Yesterday was AWESOME! We had a good turn-out of sailors and everyone was loving sailing in a new location and with perfectly flat water and amazing conditions for speed. I'm sure we'll all be keeping an eye on the weather charts now for big W/SW'ly to SE'ly winds. This location has the potential to push all of our PB's through the roof!
Thanks to KA Sail for their generous support of this race series.

· Next event – January 25 + 26 at Lake George, Beachport.
Race day one of the KA Sail SA Summer of Speed was held yesterday at a choppy Boggy Lake in winds of around 15-20 knots. The breeze did not reach the forecast 20-25, and even blew from a different direction than forecast, but we were all happy to be out on the water chasing the numbers. Entrant numbers were down on what was expected, but there is certainly time for more sailors (with or without GPS units) to join in at the next round on Dec 8 th or 9 th at the Murray Mouth. Remember, participation puts you in the running to win the major prize at the end of the season of a new KA Koncept sail!
This first day of a four-event series was fiercely competitive with all entrants staying out on the water for upwards of 5 hours in an effort to get that elusive gust that will put them in the lead. Sam Doecke sailed an amazing 201km for the day and Carl MacDonald not far behind with 178km – pity it wasn't a distance competition.
The final results were: (Sailor – Equipment – Max Screen Readout – Points Awarded).
1. Tim Hemer (Neil Pryde / Starboard) 34.7 knots 0.75 points
2. Chris Dimond (KA Sail / Exocet) 33.5 knots 2.0 points
3. Sam Doecke (KA Sail / Fanatic) 32.9 knots 3.0 points
4. Chris Reiffel (KA Sail / JP) 32.3 knots 4.0 points
5. Carl MacDonald (Neil Pryde / Starboard) 31.1 knots 5.0 points
6. Norman Clarke (Neil Pryde / Starboard) 29.9 knots 6.0 points
7. Nick Bellgrove (Neil Pryde / ?) 29.5 knots 7.0 points
8. Richard Upton (? / ?) 28.3 knots 8.0 points
9. Steve Roberts 9.0 points
10. Milos Milutinovic 9.0 points
It will be great to see more sailors on the water at the next race day in December.
Thanks to KA Sail for their generous sponsorship of this race series, and to the Lake Connewarre crew in Victoria for the beers.
