Moth Sails
Design Background
The Moth sail design program started reluctantly when Australian Moth sailor, Tim Webster asked head designer Andrew McDougall, to design him a Moth sail in 1995 for the Lake Macquarie World Championships. more...
MSL14 and 15 - Available soon.
MSL10B - 8.0m: Optimized for medium+ winds
Originally developed as a high wind foiling sail, it was proven to be a far superior in speed, particularly upwind, at the 2007 Worlds and was used in a majority of the races by 1st, 2nd, 6th and 9th overall. It features the following;
- Longer foot
- Slightly hollow leach
- Wider luff pocket
- Refined shaping to optimize efficiency once on the foils
- Better range of downhaul tension without head distortion
- New profiled battens
- New mini battens
- More streamlined batten ends
- Symmetrical batten pockets
- 250gm lighter.
Update: The first 6 production sails were made for the recent Australian Championship and were used in many races by Amac, Bora, Bear and Sam England. (Matt used one from Garda) The sails are by far the cleanest ever made by KA and were stunningly fast once on the foils.
MSL13.1 - 8.0m: Optimized for all round winds
A complete redesign aimed at extending the range of the MSL12
- Longer foot
- Wider luff pocket
- Refined shaping to give maximum power to get on the foils while keeping very good high wind performance
- Better range of downhaul tension without head distortion
- New profiled battens
- New mini battens
- More streamlined batten ends
- Symmetrical batten pockets
- 250gm lighter
The 13.1 is a fine tuning of the 13. It is actually what we have been delivering all of 2009. |

How to chose between the MSL10b and the MLS13.1:
The difference between the two sails is quite subtle:
If you are light (under 70kg), you would use the 10b as your all round sail as you will almost always be faster with this sail when on the foils. You could have the 13 for getting you on the foils even earlier in very light winds.
For us normal people, the 13 is a must: getting on the foils is very critical to keep up with the flyweights! In a race that getting up is not an issue, the 10b will be faster around the track.
The moral to this story: buy both!
What Else Do I Get?
- Black Moth symbol at top of sail.
- Full set of cams.
- Allen key for batten adjustment.
- Great looking and heavy duty sail bag.
- Satisfaction of buying the best quality and fastest Moth sail on the market.
- A huge smile on your face while sailing;)
- (Sail numbers not included)
